Our Heritage & Vision

About Mothers for Mother Ganga

A women-led environmental and social movement dedicated to protecting, preserving, and restoring sacred River Ganga while empowering women as leaders of sustainable change.

The Organization

Rooted in Compassion, Responsibility & Action

Mothers for Mother Ganga is a women-led environmental and social movement dedicated to protecting, preserving, and restoring the sacred River Ganga while empowering women to become leaders of meaningful and sustainable change.

Rooted in compassion, responsibility, awareness, and collective action, the organization was established with a strong belief that environmental protection is not solely the responsibility of institutions or governments — it is a shared social duty in which women can play a transformative role.

Mother Ganga is more than a river. She represents life, culture, heritage, spirituality, ecology, and the emotional identity of millions of people across India and around the world. For centuries, she has nourished civilizations, supported livelihoods, strengthened communities, and inspired deep spiritual connections.

However, the growing challenges of pollution, sewage discharge, environmental degradation, urban pressure, waste accumulation, and declining public awareness continue to threaten the health and future of the river. Mothers for Mother Ganga emerged as a dedicated platform to bridge environmental action, women's leadership, and community transformation.

Genesis of a Movement

Our Story

How a concerned gathering in Varanasi blossomed into an international sisterhood for Mother Ganga.

The journey of Mothers for Mother Ganga began through the vision, reflection, and deep commitment of Mrs. Abha Mishra, whose concern for the condition of River Ganga inspired the formation of this unique initiative. Driven by a strong sense of environmental responsibility and social purpose, the idea evolved into a platform designed specifically for women — a space where they could independently fulfill their duties toward society, nature, and Mother Ganga.

What started as a small gathering of approximately twenty women concerned about the deteriorating condition of the river soon transformed into a growing movement fueled by passion, awareness, and collective commitment.

The Foundational Question:

"How can communities truly protect Mother Ganga without stronger awareness, deeper participation, and meaningful leadership from women?"

This question became the cornerstone of the organization's mission. Through consultations, discussions, and collaborative efforts involving members of Sankat Mochan Foundation, environmental supporters, and international collaborators including OzGREEN Australia, the movement expanded its reach.

Today, Mothers for Mother Ganga proudly brings together women from:

Local Ghat Communities
Educational Institutions
Social & SHG Groups
India, Australia & USA

This diverse participation reflects the organization’s belief that environmental challenges require inclusive, collaborative, and globally connected solutions.

Our Identity

Who We Are

Mothers for Mother Ganga is not simply an organization. It is a community of women united by a shared purpose — protecting the environment, strengthening communities, empowering women, and preserving one of the world's most culturally and spiritually significant rivers.

We are educators, mothers, professionals, social advocates, environmental supporters, community leaders, volunteers, and changemakers working together toward a common vision.

Our work combines environmental awareness with practical empowerment. We believe that sustainable change happens when people are informed, communities are engaged, and women are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, skills, and opportunities required to lead.

Our organization functions as a bridge between environmental action, women’s leadership, public awareness, skill development, and community participation.

Our Distinctive Model

What Makes Us Different

While many initiatives focus solely on environmental awareness, our organization believes lasting change requires an integrated, women-centered model built upon five key pillars.

1. Women-Centered Leadership

We place women at the center of environmental action and decision making. Empowered women influence households, schools, neighborhoods, and future generations.

2. Action-Oriented Awareness

Awareness alone is not enough. Our work focuses on converting knowledge into practical community engagement, ghat drives, and real-world environmental action.

3. Community-Based Solutions

Local communities play a vital role. Our initiatives encourage grassroots involvement, local ownership, drain monitoring, and collaborative problem solving.

4. Skill & Economic Empowerment

We support women through practical training in cloth bag making, bamboo crafts, digital learning, and livelihood tools to foster true economic independence.

5. Collaborative Partnerships

We actively engage with scientific institutions, civic bodies, schools, and international allies like OzGREEN Australia to multiply our collective impact.
